CASTAIC JUNCTION, Los Angeles County — California Highway Patrol identifies its Castaic Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility as a 24-hour checkpoint for heavy trucks traveling north on Interstate 5 near the State Route 126 junction.
The facility, located between Magic Mountain Parkway and State Route 126, screens an estimated 2.3 million commercial vehicles annually according to CHP. Its officers and commercial vehicle inspection staff examine safety issues including vehicle condition, load securement, registration, hours-of-service requirements and driver qualifications. The checkpoint serves the busy approach to the Grapevine, where steep grades and heavy freight traffic make equipment condition important.
The station’s physical location and round-the-clock staffing do not mean every truck is stopped for the same inspection or that the facility offers gasoline, food or general traveler services. Traffic patterns and enforcement activity vary, and trucks must follow the current posted lane controls and weigh-station instructions.
Practical information for residents and travelers
Commercial drivers should confirm applicable weight, equipment and logbook regulations before entering the corridor. Local motorists should maintain space around heavy vehicles and allow additional travel time when freight traffic or highway incidents cause congestion.
