CASTAIC JUNCTION, Los Angeles County — Castaic Lake’s boating rules have changed in response to invasive mussels: Los Angeles County Parks now treats Castaic and Pyramid lakes as infested water bodies and requires all boats to be inspected on exit.
The parks department says the old mandatory arrival inspection for invasive mussels has been discontinued at the two affected lakes, although required boating safety equipment inspections continue. Before leaving, boat operators must remove drain plugs and make sure boats and trailers are free of mud, vegetation and other material. Exit seals may be issued, but a seal from an infested lake does not guarantee admission at another reservoir.
These are measures intended to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species. Other water bodies may demand decontamination, quarantine or a dry-out period even when a vessel has already been checked at Castaic. It is unsafe to assume that any particular seal transfers automatically to every marina.
Practical information for residents and travelers
Before towing a boat from the Castaic Junction corridor to another lake, check the destination’s latest entry rules and keep inspection paperwork. Kayak and small-craft operators should also review launch requirements and any fee that applies to their vessel type.
